Our Approach
Elections work best when voters have clear, accurate information about candidates, issues, and events.
NancyOnNorwalk is committed to independent, transparent reporting. Part of that transparency includes explaining how information reaches our newsroom and how coverage decisions are made.
This guide is intended to help both readers and candidates understand our process. While experienced campaigns are often familiar with these standards, many local candidates are running for the first time. Providing clear expectations helps ensure fair, consistent coverage for everyone.
How Information Reaches Our Newsroom
NancyOnNorwalk does not actively monitor campaign websites, social media, or third-party platforms for updates.
This is simply a matter of capacity. We are a small newsroom, and we do not have the staff to consistently monitor every campaign’s website, social media accounts, and third-party platforms. Asking campaigns to submit information directly ensures nothing falls through the cracks.
To ensure information can be considered for coverage, campaigns should send the following directly to the newsroom:
- Campaign announcements
- Event notices
- Policy positions or updates
- Endorsements
- Major campaign developments
If we are not notified, we may not be aware of the information in time to consider it for coverage.
Submitting Campaign Information
When contacting the newsroom, please include:
- Candidate name and office sought
- Clear subject line (e.g., “EVENT: Candidate Name – Date”)
- Relevant details (who, what, when, where, why)
- Contact information
Submitted materials may be used as tips, background, or source material and may be edited, summarized, or verified.
Submission does not guarantee publication.
Campaign Event Coverage Guidelines
NancyOnNorwalk prioritizes events that provide meaningful opportunities for Norwalk residents to engage with candidates.
To be considered for publication, events should:
- Take place within Norwalk
- Be open to the public
- Provide an opportunity for residents to interact with the candidate
Examples include town halls, public forums, and meet-and-greets.
Campaign events are generally published the business day before the event (Monday through Friday).
To be considered, event information should be submitted at least two business days in advance.
Late submissions may not be published.
Announcements, Policies, and Endorsements
Campaigns are responsible for sharing their own updates.
If your campaign:
- Announces a candidacy
- Releases a policy position
- Receives an endorsement
You should send that information directly to the newsroom.
We do not automatically track campaign platforms, endorsements, or announcements.
Interviews and Requests for Comment
NancyOnNorwalk may contact candidates for comment as part of reporting.
If a response is not received by the stated deadline, coverage will proceed without comment.
Editorial Independence
NancyOnNorwalk maintains full editorial independence.
Candidates may:
- Provide information
- Respond to questions
- Request corrections of factual errors
Candidates may not:
- Approve articles before publication
- Request changes to tone or framing
Corrections
If you believe an article contains a factual error, please contact the newsroom with:
- The specific information in question
- The correct information
We review all correction requests. Differences in opinion or interpretation are not considered factual errors.
Why These Standards Exist
These standards ensure that NancyOnNorwalk remains a resource for the entire community.
When everyone follows the same process, first-time candidates and seasoned incumbents stand on equal footing. No campaign receives preferential access or coverage simply because they are more familiar with how newsrooms work. Every candidate has the same opportunity to share their story, their positions, and their vision for Norwalk.
